Osho: The Difference Between Self Awareness and Self Consciousness

I recently read the book “Learning to Silence the Mind” by Osho. In this book, he briefly explains the difference between ‘self-consciousness’ and ‘self-awareness’. His explanation helped me find myself even further and I am writing this with the energy that it will help you in your self-discovery journey as well.

Self-Consciousness and Self-Awareness

“Self-consciousness is a disease. Self-awareness is health”. – OSHO

What it means to be self-conscious…

In the word ‘self-consciousness’, the self is emphasized. Thus, when you are self-conscious, you are constantly conscious of yourself. In other words, you are constantly thinking about what others think of you. To be self-conscious is to be egotistical as you are always thinking of you. As Osho says, ” Ego is the greatest disease”.

Those who are self-conscious are afraid that their self will be taken away without realizing that they do not have a self to begin with. It is important to understand that those who are self-conscious are borrowing self from another person. To explain further, when someone insults a self-conscious person that person absorbs that insult and makes it a part of them; same as when someone compliments that person, they will make that compliment a part of who they are. As a result, what a self-conscious person thinks of themselves is actually what is being projected onto them. Therefore, a person who is self-conscious does not have genuine insight into self at all. Self– consciousness is a disease.

Turn self-consciousness into self-awareness…

The goal is to emphasize conscious in the word self-conscious. When this word is emphasized it creates a completely different meaning.

To be self-conscious is to be self-aware. To be self-aware means to be centered within yourself. When you are self-aware you are open to your genuine self. Someone who is self-aware does not let the opinions of others become apart of who they are. Someone who is self-aware does not let others project onto them. They simply live genuine to who they are. Self-awareness is health.

Ways to become more self-aware…

Meditation

Simply, meditation is a mental exercise that strengthens your awareness, mindfulness, and higher consciousness. Typically, meditation is practiced to help deepen the understanding of life and its transcendent forces.

First and foremost, it is important to understand that meditation is NOT meant to clear your thoughts. In fact, it is the opposite. In order to meditate, you must focus and ponder on something. Think of the word meditation as a synonym for the word concentration. For example, in order to use mediation to reduce anxiety, you have to concentrate on calming down and relaxing.

Secondly, there is no right or wrong way to meditate. A “good” meditation is different for everyone; no two people have the same experience. DO NOT make the mistake of comparing your experience with another person’s. Stay focused on your journey and compare it to your own previous experiences.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the state of being completely present and fully aware of yourself. To live mindfully refers to living in the present, rather than dwelling on the past or anticipating the future. In other words, mindfulness is an exercise that brings your awareness to your physical and emotional senses without self-criticism or judgment.

Promote a Spiritual Awakening

A spiritual awakening or spiritual enlightenment is a transformation of your soul and an eye-opening experience to the truth of the universe. It’s an elevated way of being that unlocks your higher consciousness to clarify all uncertainty in your life. Your higher consciousness or higher self is who you truly are instead of what others project onto you.

    It is worth to see movie about Osho on netflix – there is document movie Wild wild land – about building city in Oregon by Osho. Very interesting. It is not clear person.

      Yes! I have seen that documentary…that is actually what interested me in Osho’s teachings. I find him to be profound and his way of living so intriguing.
